Large Language Model. Take the words apart and the mystique goes with them.
Model means a representation of a thing, never the thing. A climate model is not the climate.
Language is the computational linguistics sense, not the humanities one: text as a statistical sequence of tokens. It carries no claim to comprehension or reasoning.
Large refers to the parameter count. Nothing more.
What the system does is predict the next token, then the next, using what billions of documents taught it about which token tends to follow which. The output reads like thought because it was trained on thought. The mechanism is arithmetic.
AI doesn’t think. AI computes.
