What is

ANI

Artificial Narrow Intelligence, also called weak AI. A system built for one task and trained on data from that task alone. Inside those limits it often beats people, because it never tires, never loses focus and handles volumes no team could. Outside them it has nothing. It does not know the task is a task, and it cannot carry what it learned into a neighbouring problem the way a person would after a week on the job.

It has been in commercial use for decades, mostly without anyone calling it AI: spam filters, fraud detection, search ranking, route planning, speech recognition, recommendation engines, invoice reading, demand forecasting. Every AI system running anywhere today belongs in this category, including the ones that appear to handle any subject you raise. Breadth of subject matter is not the same as breadth of capability.

For anyone automating work, this is the useful part. Narrow is not a disappointment, it is the reason the technology is dependable. A bounded job with clear rules and high volume is exactly what these systems do well, and that describes most of what eats an operation’s week.

AI doesn’t think. AI computes.

…not by how much of it a system actually has. The scale runs from narrow AI (ANI), a specialist that does one task and often does it better than we do, through general AI (AGI), a machine that could match humans across the board, up to superintelligence…
